South Alabama Marine Consortium (SAMC)
The SAMC is a Random Drug Testing Program administered by Gulf South Resources. It was established for all non-fishing * (i.e. dolphin cruises, para-sailing, dinner cruise) boats (businesses) located in Alabama Coastal areas to meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements requiring a random drug testing program. A federal statute requires our members to take steps to implement a drug testing program for applicants and some of their employees. The federal regulations include provisions for chemical testing prior to employment, periodic testing, random testing, testing after accidents, testing based on reasonable cause, and testing after certain employees return to their jobs.

Federal regulations issued by the US Coast Guard (46 CFR Part 4, 46 CFR Part 5, and 46 CFR Part 16) mandate urine testing for illegal drugs and alcohol testing via breath test, saliva test, or both. Drug and alcohol testing is intended to insure a drug free work force and to eliminate drug and alcohol use and abuse in employees performing safety and security related functions while that employee has a prohibited drug or alcohol in his or her system, or if an employee has used drugs, as evidenced by the presence of drugs or drug metabolites in his/her system. The testing is designed with the legitimate privacy concerns of our employees in mind, and every effort is being made to insure the accuracy of results.
